Paul Louis Oudart was a prolific French artist and naturalist who became a central figure in the golden age of French scientific illustration. After establishing himself as a talented painter of flora and fauna in Paris, he was commissioned to illustrate the official accounts of several major voyages of discovery, including those led by Dumont d'Urville. His primary contribution was the application of lithography to natural history, allowing for greater detail and wider distribution of scientific images than previous engraving techniques. Oudart's work is significant for its artistic elegance and its rigorous adherence to anatomical accuracy, making his plates essential references for ichthyologists and ornithologists.
