"Mamillaria elegans P. DC.". This work depicts a globular cactus crowned with a ring of vibrant red flowers, set against a stippled ground texture. This hand-coloured lithograph is from the series Blühende Kakteen (Iconographia Cactacearum), commissioned by the German Cactus Society (Deutsche Kakteen-Gesellschaft) and published by J. Neumann in Neudamm in 1904. The publication was a premier botanical series of the early twentieth century, dedicated to providing high-fidelity, life-sized illustrations of flowering cacti for enthusiasts and scientific collections.
Paul Julius Neumann was a German publisher and lithographer based in Neudamm who specialized in high-quality botanical and agricultural illustrations. His firm was instrumental in producing some of the most detailed horticultural plates of the era, particularly those documenting the diverse and exotic species of the cactus family.
