Beskrivning
"Echinocactus chilensis Hildm.". This work features a cylindrical, ribbed cactus with sharp spines, topped by two large pink flowers with yellow centers. This hand-coloured lithograph is from the botanical series Blühende Kakteen (Iconographia Cactacearum), commissioned by the German Cactus Society (Deutsche Kakteen-Gesellschaft) and published by J. Neumann in Neudamm in 1904. The series is celebrated for its scientific accuracy and aesthetic quality, serving as a primary record for succulent species documented at the turn of the century.
Paul Julius Neumann was a German publisher and lithographer based in Neudamm who specialized in high-quality botanical and agricultural illustrations. His firm was instrumental in producing some of the most detailed horticultural plates of the era, particularly those documenting the diverse and exotic species of the cactus family. He collaborated with leading botanists of the German Cactus Society to ensure the taxonomic validity of each plate produced by his press. Neumann's work remains a significant contribution to the field of early twentieth-century botanical art.
