Beskrivning

"The Crested Chatterer of America". This work depicts a Cedar Waxwing perched upon a branch surrounded by flowering foliage. This etching is from the monumental encyclopedia Encyclopaedia Londinensis; or, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature, compiled and published by John Wilkes in London in 1808. The plate is an example of the high-quality natural history illustrations produced for the publication, which sought to provide a comprehensive visual and textual record of global flora and fauna during the early nineteenth century.

John Wilkes was an English printer, bookseller, and editor based in London who is best known for producing the Encyclopaedia Londinensis. He spent over twenty years compiling this multi-volume work, which eventually spanned twenty-four volumes and featured thousands of detailed copperplate engravings. Wilkes collaborated with numerous artists and engravers to ensure that the scientific and technical subjects were represented with clarity and precision. His publication was one of the most ambitious and successful encyclopedic projects of the Regency era, contributing significantly to the dissemination of knowledge in Great Britain.
