Beskrivning
"The collared Raven of Africa". This work depicts a white-necked raven standing atop a rocky outcrop, characterized by its powerful beak and the distinct pale patch on its neck. This etching is a plate from the multi-volume encyclopedia Encyclopaedia Londinensis; or, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature, compiled and published by John Wilkes in London in 1802. The illustration serves as a scientific record of the African corvid, emphasizing the anatomical details and plumage patterns that distinguish the species for a nineteenth-century scholarly audience.
John Wilkes was an English printer, bookseller, and editor based in London who is best known for producing the Encyclopaedia Londinensis. He spent over twenty years compiling this monumental work, which eventually spanned twenty-four volumes and featured thousands of detailed copperplate engravings.
