"Cucujus, Culex, Curculio, Cyclidium, and Cynips". This work presents a variety of entomological specimens, including scarlet and blue beetles, mosquito flies, and numerous species of weevils. This hand-coloured etching is from the multi-volume encyclopedia Encyclopaedia Londinensis; or, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature, compiled and published by John Wilkes in London in 1802. The plate illustrates the diversity of the insect world, using vibrant colours to distinguish between the different genera and species for the Enlightenment-era reader.

John Wilkes was an English printer, bookseller, and editor based in London who is best known for producing the Encyclopaedia Londinensis. He spent over twenty years compiling this monumental work, which eventually spanned twenty-four volumes and featured thousands of detailed copperplate engravings. Wilkes collaborated with numerous artists and engravers to ensure that the scientific and technical subjects were represented with clarity and precision. His publication was one of the most ambitious and successful encyclopedic projects of the Regency era, contributing significantly to the dissemination of knowledge in Great Britain.
