Bilder John Chapman (Active 1792-1823) – View of a Beached Whale – Etching (1802)
Beskrivning
"The Mysticetus, or common Whale". This work depicts several figures clambering upon and flensing a large whale stranded on a shoreline, with a mountainous coast and a sailing vessel visible in the background. This etching was published as part of the monumental Encyclopaedia Londinensis; or, Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature, compiled by John Wilkes in London. The scene captures the eighteenth-century industry and scientific curiosity surrounding cetaceans, illustrating the physical scale of the animal in relation to the human figures engaged in harvesting its blubber.
John Chapman was an English engraver and artist active in London during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
