Bilder Johann Friedrich August Krüger (1754-1791) – View of a Largehairtail or Ribbonfish – Hand-coloured etching (1785)
Beskrivning
"Trichiurus Lepturus. Der Spitzschwanz. Le quille en cul. The Sword Fish." This work depicts a Largehairtail, or ribbonfish, characterized by its elongated, eel-like body and silvery, scale-less skin. This hand-coloured etching is a plate from the landmark ichthyological series Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische, published in Berlin between 1782 and 1795 by Marcus Elieser Bloch. The illustration is notable for its use of metallic pigments to mimic the iridescent sheen of the fish's skin, a technical innovation that made this publication the most lavish and scientifically significant work on fish during the eighteenth century.
Johann Friedrich August Krüger was a German painter and engraver based in Berlin who specialized in natural history subjects. He was one of the principal artists employed by Marcus Elieser Bloch to create the hundreds of copperplates required for his monumental survey of the world's fish. Krüger’s work is distinguished by its meticulous attention to anatomical detail, such as the fin rays and lateral lines, which were essential for scientific classification. His collaboration on Bloch's series helped establish a new standard for ichthyological illustration that combined artistic elegance with empirical accuracy. Krüger's prints remain highly prized for their scientific historical value and their pioneering printing techniques.
