Beskrivning

"Pleuronectes Passer. Der Lincke Stachelflunder." This work illustrates a European flounder, a flatfish species, showing its characteristic asymmetrical body with both eyes located on the left side. This hand-coloured etching is a plate from the seminal work Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische, published in Berlin in 1782 by Marcus Elieser Bloch. The illustration is a masterpiece of Enlightenment-era ichthyology, utilizing fine engraving and subtle hand-applied washes to represent the mottled camouflage pattern of the fish's skin and the delicate structure of its dorsal and anal fins.

Johann Friedrich August Krüger was a German painter and engraver based in Berlin who specialized in natural history subjects. He was one of the primary artists commissioned by Marcus Elieser Bloch to create the intricate copperplates for his multi-volume survey of fish species. Krüger’s work is celebrated for its scientific precision, capturing specific anatomical details that allowed for accurate taxonomic identification. His collaboration on Bloch's series contributed to what is widely considered the most beautiful and influential work on ichthyology ever produced. Krüger's prints are noted for their high technical quality and their role in documenting global biodiversity during the late eighteenth century.
