Bilder Cornelis de Bruijn (1652-1727) – Views of Isfahan: Allahverdi Khan Bridge and Chahar Bagh – Hand-coloured etching (1718)
Beskrivning
"Pont d’ Allawerdie-Cham. Le Chyaer-Baeg". This work features four distinct views of Isfahan, Persia, arranged on a single sheet. The upper left view depicts the Si-o-se-pol, or Allahverdi Khan Bridge, while the remaining three panels illustrate the Chahar Bagh Avenue, showing its characteristic tree-lined promenades, water channels, and royal pavilions. This hand-coloured etching is from the French edition of Voyages de Corneille le Brun par la Moscovie, en Perse, et aux Indes, published in Amsterdam in 1718. The publication is celebrated for providing European audiences with some of the most accurate and artistically refined visual records of the Safavid Empire, documented during the artist's extensive travels through the region.
Cornelis de Bruijn was a Dutch painter, traveler, and author who spent many years exploring the Middle East, Russia, and Southeast Asia. Unlike many of his contemporaries who relied on hearsay, de Bruijn was a meticulous observer who made sketches on-site to ensure scientific and architectural accuracy. His work is characterized by a commitment to realism, capturing the costume, social life, and monumental architecture of the cultures he visited. His published travelogues were highly influential in the eighteenth century, serving as a vital source of information for geographers and historians. De Bruijn's legacy lies in his dual role as a skilled artist and an empirical researcher, bridging the gap between art and travel documentation.
