Bilder Cornelis de Bruijn (1652-1727) – Portrait of the King's Doorkeeper – Etching (1718)
Beskrivning
"Portier du Roy." This work presents a profile portrait of a Persian official, specifically a doorkeeper of the Safavid royal court. The figure is depicted with a prominent beard and a fur-lined robe, wearing an elaborate turban adorned with vertical feathers and a decorative pin. This etching is from the French edition of Voyages de Corneille le Brun par la Moscovie, en Perse, et aux Indes, published in Amsterdam in 1718. The plate is significant for its ethnographic precision, documenting the specific regalia and sartorial customs of the Persian court during the early eighteenth century with a level of detail that was rare in European publications of the time.
Cornelis de Bruijn was a Dutch painter, traveler, and author who spent several years exploring the Middle East and Russia. Unlike many contemporary illustrators who adapted their work from existing sources, de Bruijn was a trained artist who insisted on sketching from life to ensure architectural and cultural accuracy. His travelogues provided European scholars and the public with some of the most reliable visual information regarding the Safavid Empire and the Ottoman world. De Bruijn's work is characterized by a commitment to realism and a meticulous recording of the people, costumes, and monuments he encountered. His dual legacy as an explorer and an artist remains highly influential in the history of orientalist study and travel literature.
