"La Bergere avec sa flute". This work illustrates a pastoral scene typical of the rococo style. A young shepherd and shepherdess are shown seated under a tree in a romantic landscape. The shepherdess plays a flute while the shepherd sits close to her. Sheep and a basket are in the foreground and a stone pedestal with a vase is on the left. A small rural building and distant hills are in the background. A poem in French is printed below the image. This etching and engraving was published in Paris and reflects the sentimental interest in rural life during the eighteenth century.
Claude-Augustin Duflos was a French engraver who worked in Paris during the eighteenth century. He was a member of a prominent family of engravers and studied under his father. Duflos specialized in reproducing the works of leading painters of his time into print. He was particularly known for his technical skill in capturing the delicate textures and lighting of pastoral and mythological subjects. His work contributed to the widespread popularity of the galante aesthetic in European art.
