"Des Durchleuchtigen Hochgebornnen Fursten unnd Herrn Joachim Ernsten Marggrauen zu Brandenburg Auffzug zum Ringrennen". This work depicts a ceremonial procession from the wedding festivities of Duke Johann Friedrich of Württemberg and Barbara Sophia of Brandenburg. The scene features a knight in ornate classical armor holding a staff, followed by two figures dressed as satyrs or wild men leading horses. This hand-coloured etching is from the commemorative volume Repraesentatio der Furstl. Auffzug unnd Ritterspiel, published in Schwäbisch Gmünd in 1611. The series documents the elaborate pageantry, including tournaments and allegorical parades, held in Stuttgart in November 1609.
Balthasar Küchler was a German painter and engraver based in Schwäbisch Gmünd. He is primarily remembered for his detailed documentation of courtly festivals and aristocratic celebrations in the early seventeenth century. His most significant work is the extensive series of plates recording the wedding of the Duke of Württemberg, which provides a vital historical record of Renaissance festival culture. Küchler’s style is characterized by its focus on costume, heraldry, and the theatrical elements of court life. His contributions were essential in disseminating the visual splendor of the Württemberg court to a wider European audience.
