Beskrivning

"Fortuna. Victoria". This work illustrates an elaborate triumphal chariot from the wedding festivities of Duke Johann Friedrich of Württemberg and Barbara Sophia of Brandenburg. The chariot is pulled by two unicorns and carries the allegorical figures of Fortuna, standing at the front with a sail and a sphere, and Victoria, seated on a high throne at the rear holding a palm branch and a laurel wreath. This hand-coloured etching is from the commemorative volume Repraesentatio der Furstl. Auffzug unnd Ritterspiel, published in Schwäbisch Gmünd in 1611. The series is a major document of Renaissance festival culture, recording the theatrical pageantry and symbolic displays held in Stuttgart in 1609.

Balthasar Küchler was a German painter and engraver based in Schwäbisch Gmünd who specialized in documenting the courtly life of the early seventeenth century. He is best known for his extensive series of plates recording the various parades, tournaments, and allegorical inventions created for the Württemberg ducal wedding. Küchler’s work is characterized by its meticulous attention to the design of festival architecture, costumes, and heraldic symbols. His etchings served as an important means of communicating the power and cultural sophistication of the German Protestant courts to a wider European audience. His legacy remains a primary source for the study of Baroque theater and ceremony.
