Beskrivning

"The Connoisseur and Tired Boy". This work presents a satirical genre scene focusing on the contrast between aesthetic obsession and physical exhaustion. An elderly art collector is shown peering intently through his fingers at a landscape painting, which is illuminated by a single candle he holds. Behind the frame, a young boy tasked with holding the artwork for the gentleman is depicted in mid-yawn, his mouth wide open in fatigue. This mezzotint was engraved in London and published in November 1773. The composition is celebrated for its dramatic use of chiaroscuro, a hallmark of the mezzotint technique, which allows for rich, velvety blacks and soft tonal transitions to simulate candlelight.

Henry Robert Morland was an English portrait and genre painter known for his domestic scenes and depictions of servants. He worked primarily in London and was the father of the even more famous painter George Morland. Philip Dawe, who engraved this plate, was Morland's apprentice and a master of the mezzotint medium, often collaborating with his teacher to bring these popular social satires to a wider audience. The mezzotint process was particularly favored in Britain for reproducing the effects of oil paintings, as it relied on roughening the copper plate to hold ink rather than using lines. Morland's legacy rests on his ability to capture the humorous and mundane aspects of eighteenth-century British life with technical sophistication.
