Beskrivning
"Etablissement des Anglais dans la Nouvelle Angleterre". This work depicts a meeting between English colonial settlers and Native Americans on the coast of New England. The central figures are shown in a diplomatic exchange, with the English colonists dressed in eighteenth-century attire and the Native Americans carrying bows and arrows. A fortified coastal town and a European ship are visible in the background. The scene is enclosed within a highly decorative rococo frame featuring floral garlands and urns. A lengthy descriptive text in French is printed in a cartouche at the bottom, detailing the history of the discovery and settlement of the region. This etching and engraving was published in Paris as part of Delisle de Sales' Histoire philosophique du monde primitif.
Jean-Baptiste-Claude Delisle de Sales was a French philosopher, historian, and man of letters. He is best known for his monumental multi-volume works that attempted to synthesize the history of humanity, nature, and philosophy during the Enlightenment. His publications were often elaborately illustrated to provide visual evidence for his historical and geographical accounts. Delisle de Sales was a controversial figure whose writings sometimes drew the ire of ecclesiastical authorities, leading to his temporary imprisonment. His work reflects the eighteenth-century European desire to categorize and understand the cultures and histories of the New World through a philosophical lens.
