Beskrivning

"The Triumph of Bacchus". This work presents a classical interpretation of the mythological god of wine and festivity. Bacchus is depicted in a triumphant pose, surrounded by his traditional retinue of satyrs and followers. The composition emphasizes anatomical precision and balanced form, characteristic of the academic style. This lithograph was published in Paris and reflects the mid-nineteenth-century interest in reviving classical and mythological themes with contemporary technical refinement. The use of lithography allows for soft tonal gradations that mimic the appearance of a charcoal or chalk drawing.

Victor Mottez was a French painter and lithographer who was a prominent student of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. He is best known for his portraits and his ambitious efforts to revive the art of fresco painting in France, most notably in the Church of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois in Paris. Mottez spent significant time in Italy, where he studied the techniques of the Old Masters, which deeply influenced his commitment to classical draftsmanship and formal clarity. His lithographic work often functioned as a means to explore character and light outside of his larger-scale mural commissions. Mottez's legacy remains tied to his role as a preserver of classical techniques during a period of rapid artistic transition in the nineteenth century.
