Bilder Andrea Pozzo (1642–1709) – View of Classical Ruins with a Grand Palace – Etching in sanguine (1702)
Beskrivning
"View of Classical Ruins". This work presents a Capriccio or architectural fantasy, depicting a complex of decaying ancient structures in the foreground. The ruins feature a series of arches, columns, and crumbling masonry overgrown with vegetation. In the distance, a large and intact classical palace with a balustrade adorned with statues stands near a body of water, where a small boat is visible. This etching is printed in sanguine ink, a technique used to replicate the appearance of red chalk drawings. This plate was published as part of the influential architectural treatise Perspectiva Pictorum et Architectorum, which appeared in several editions in Rome and London during the early eighteenth century.
Andrea Pozzo was an Italian Jesuit brother, painter, architect, and art theorist known for his mastery of quadratura and perspectival illusion. He is best recognized for his spectacular ceiling fresco in the Church of Sant'Ignazio in Rome, which creates the illusion of a vast dome and vaulted heaven. Pozzo's theoretical work on perspective became a standard textbook for architects and artists across Europe, providing detailed instructions on how to construct complex three-dimensional spaces on two-dimensional surfaces. His architectural designs and stage sets influenced the development of the Late Baroque and Rococo styles. Pozzo's legacy remains centered on his role in perfecting the science of perspective to serve religious and grand architectural narratives.
