"Cavato dal Gabinetto del Papa Urbano VIII". This work depicts the meeting of Cleopatra and Mark Antony in Tarsus. The harbor scene features large sailing vessels on the left and neoclassical architectural structures, including a temple with a rotunda and a colonnaded palace, on the right. A group of figures in classical drapery moves across the pier while oarsmen prepare small boats in the foreground. This etching was published in 1772 and belongs to a series of prints commissioned to document the artworks and treasures held in the private collection of Pope Urban VIII. The work is noted for its balanced composition and the precise rendering of light on the stone surfaces and water.
Gasparo Galliari was an Italian painter and set designer who worked extensively for major theaters across Europe, including La Scala in Milan. He was a member of the influential Galliari family of scenographers and was instrumental in transitioning theatrical design from the late Baroque to the Neoclassical style. His printmaking often reflected his expertise in stagecraft, using architectural elements to create dramatic depth and focus for historical narratives. Galliari was celebrated for his ability to integrate complex figurative groups into grand topographical settings. His career highlights the intersection of theater design and fine art printmaking in the late eighteenth century.
