Beskrivning
"Jan de I." This work depicts John I (1284–1299), Count of Holland, in a stylized standing pose within a classical architectural setting. The count is dressed in noble attire featuring a green tunic with fur trim and a purple mantle, holding a large ceremonial sword with both hands. A small shield with a lion rampant is positioned near his shoulder. The central image is surrounded by an elaborate border of military trophies, including helmets, shields, lances, and banners. The top center features a coat of arms held by putti, while the bottom includes a memento mori with a skull and crossed bones. This hand-coloured engraving was published in Leeuwarden by François Halma in 1725 as part of a series documenting the Counts of Holland.
Jan Goeree was a prolific Dutch engraver, painter, and poet active in Amsterdam during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. He was a student of Gerard de Lairesse and became well known for his historical and allegorical illustrations, as well as his decorative title pages for scientific and historical texts. His work is characterized by a refined neoclassical aesthetic and a mastery of complex ornamental detail. Goeree’s designs were frequently utilized by major Dutch publishers like Halma to bring a sense of grandeur to historical chronicles. His contribution to the visual record of the Netherlands reflects the Enlightenment era's interest in national identity and the systematic documentation of its ruling dynasties.
