Beskrivning

"Dirk de I." This work depicts Dirk I (c. 875–c. 939), the first Count of Holland, in a stylized standing pose set against a grand classical interior. The count is portrayed with a long beard and noble features, wearing an ornate purple patterned mantle and a feathered hat. He holds a staff in one hand and gestures toward the viewer with the other, while a shield bearing the lion of Holland rests on his shoulder. The central scene is enclosed in a complex ornamental border composed of military trophies, including suits of armor, shields, and trumpets. The bottom section features a vanitas motif with a winged hourglass and a skull crowned with laurel leaves. This hand-coloured engraving was published in Leeuwarden by François Halma in 1725.

Jan Goeree was a prominent Dutch artist active during the Golden Age of Dutch printmaking, known for his work as an engraver, painter, and architect. He specialized in creating highly detailed historical and allegorical scenes, often collaborating with major publishers to illustrate scholarly and genealogical texts. His style is marked by a sophisticated use of baroque ornamentation and a command of perspective, which he used to create depth and drama in portraiture. Goeree's illustrations for the Counts of Holland series are considered significant examples of early eighteenth-century historical documentation. His ability to blend factual historical figures with elaborate decorative symbolism made him one of the most sought-after designers of his era.
