Beskrivning

"Das Schwingen. La Balançoire." This work illustrates a group of five putti or young children engaged in playful activity in a wild, mountainous landscape. They are using a fallen tree trunk as a makeshift see-saw or swing over a rocky outcrop. The composition is dynamic, with children positioned at various points along the log to balance and propel each other. The scene is framed by rugged cliffs and a solitary tree, with a distant vista of hills and a body of water visible on the left. German and French verses are printed at the bottom, describing how children delight in such pastimes. This etching and engraving was published in Augsburg and is part of a series of genre or allegorical scenes designed by Bergmüller.

Johann Georg Bergmüller was a leading German painter, draughtsman, and engraver of the Baroque period. He served as the director of the Augsburg Academy of Art and was highly influential through both his large-scale frescoes and his numerous published prints. His work often blended religious and mythological themes with observations of everyday life, characterized by a lively sense of movement and refined decorative sensibility. Bergmüller's technical skill helped establish Augsburg as a major center for printmaking and artistic theory in the eighteenth century. He is particularly noted for his contributions to the development of the South German Rococo style, leaving a significant legacy in both church decoration and graphic arts.
