Beskrivning

"Le Baiser Surpris". This work illustrates a humorous genre scene set within a rustic cottage interior. A young man steals a kiss from a maiden seated at a spinning wheel while an older man sleeps soundly in a chair by the hearth. In the background, a woman peeks through a doorway, observing the secret encounter. The room is filled with domestic details, including a violin hanging on the wall, kitchen utensils, and a dog resting near the fire. This aquatint and engraving is a nineteenth-century interpretation by Jean-Pierre-Marie Jazet after a composition by William Kidd. The work utilizes Jazet's signature aquatint technique to achieve rich tonal gradations and a soft, atmospheric quality that enhances the intimate setting of the scene.

Jean-Pierre-Marie Jazet was a preeminent French engraver and aquatinter active during the first half of the nineteenth century. He was the nephew and pupil of the celebrated engraver Philibert-Louis Debucourt, from whom he learned the complexities of the aquatint process. William Kidd was a Scottish genre painter based in London, known for his humorous and lively depictions of domestic life and public festivities. Jazet became famous for his high-quality reproductions of contemporary masters, using his technical mastery to produce prints with a painterly depth and variety of texture. Jazet's legacy remains centered on his role in elevating the aquatint medium to a primary vehicle for popular and historical imagery in France.
