"Excrementa hominum Panthera auido appetit ore" depicts a method of hunting panthers using human excrement as bait in a wooded landscape while hunters watch from the canopy. This engraving is part of the series Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium published by Philips Galle in Antwerp.
Jan van der Straet, also known as Stradanus, was a versatile Flemish artist who spent the majority of his career in Florence. He was a prominent designer for the Medici tapestry works and a prolific draughtsman whose compositions were frequently engraved by the Galle family in Antwerp. His work is characterized by a blend of Northern realism and Italian Mannerist style. He is celebrated for his vast contributions to printmaking, particularly in his depictions of sports, technology, and natural history.
