"Tentyra in Aegypto, Nilum iuxta, insula gentem" depicts the inhabitants of Tentyra hunting crocodiles along the banks of the Nile using clubs and wooden stakes to jam the jaws of the reptiles. This engraving is a copper engraving from the renowned hunting series Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium, published by Philips Galle in Antwerp. The scene illustrates the perceived bravery of the local people in subduing dangerous river fauna. The work reflects the sixteenth-century fascination with exotic locations and the various methods of animal capture throughout the known world.
Jan van der Straet, also known as Stradanus, was a versatile Flemish artist who spent the majority of his career in Florence. He was a prominent designer for the Medici tapestry works and a prolific draughtsman whose compositions were frequently engraved by the Galle family in Antwerp. His work is characterized by a blend of Northern realism and Italian Mannerist style. He is celebrated for his vast contributions to printmaking, particularly in his depictions of sports, technology, and natural history.
