Sebastian Münster was a German cartographer and professor at the University of Basel who became the leading cosmographer of the sixteenth century. He was a multi-talented humanist who mastered Hebrew and contributed significantly to the fields of mathematics and astronomy. His principal work, the Cosmographia, was an ambitious attempt to describe the entire world through a combination of history, geography, and ethnography. Münster is recognized for his extensive use of woodcut illustrations to bring the cities and regions of Europe to life for a diverse reading audience. His publications laid the foundation for modern cartography and remained influential for over a century.
