Bilder Sebastian Münster (1488–1552) – Map of Amsterdam – Netherlands – Woodcut (1550)
Beskrivning
"Amsteldam" presents a bird's-eye view of the city of Amsterdam, showing its early canal system and horseshoe-shaped urban layout. The city is depicted with its harbor filled with sailing vessels and is accompanied by the coat of arms of Amsterdam in the upper right corner. This work is a woodcut from a German edition of the Cosmographia, published by Heinrich Petri in Basel. The text describes the city's significant commercial growth and compares its watery setting to that of Venice, highlighting its importance as a center for maritime trade in Northern Europe.
Sebastian Münster was a German cartographer, cosmographer, and professor of Hebrew at the University of Basel. He was one of the most significant scholars of the Renaissance, known for synthesizing vast amounts of geographical and historical data into accessible formats. His Cosmographia was a landmark publication that combined maps, city views, and ethnographic descriptions to document the known world. Münster's work relied on a network of correspondents and artists across Europe to provide up-to-date topographical details. His woodcut maps and views set a high standard for accuracy and artistic quality in sixteenth-century printmaking.
