Bilder Jacob Cats (1577–1660) – Emblem of the Swordsman – Engraving (1627)
Beskrivning
"Sine Vulnere Laedor" features a circular emblem of a man in seventeenth-century attire standing in a landscape, holding a sword that has been broken by lightning without damaging the scabbard. This engraving illustrates the concept of internal injury or heartache that is not visible on the surface. The work originates from the book Proteus ofte Minne-Beelden Verandert in Sinne-Beelden, published by Pieter van Waesberge in Rotterdam. The page includes moralistic verses in Dutch, Latin, and French, along with citations from classical authors such as Tacitus and Virgil to provide a multi-layered ethical lesson.
Jacob Cats was a Dutch poet, jurist, and politician who became one of the most famous writers of the Dutch Golden Age. He is best known for his emblem books which combined domestic realism with didactic moral messages, earning him the nickname Vader Cats. His works were immensely popular and were found in almost every Dutch household, serving as a guide for Christian conduct and social behavior. Cats served as Grand Pensionary of Holland and was a central figure in the cultural and political life of the Netherlands.
