Bilder Jacob Le Roy (1633–1719) – View of Berentrode Manor – Belgium – Engraving (1694)
Beskrivning
"Berentrode" presents a bird's-eye topographical view of the Berentrode manor and its extensive formal gardens, orchards, and surrounding agricultural lands in the region of Antwerp. The composition features two prominent coats of arms in the upper corners belonging to the noble Beer family. This copperplate engraving is from the work Descriptio Castellorum et Praetoriorum Nobilium Brabantiae, published in Antwerp in 1694. The work provides a detailed record of seventeenth-century Flemish estate management and landscape design, showcasing the symmetrical avenues of trees and the architectural layout of the main house and outbuildings.
Jacob Le Roy was a Belgian historian, canon, and noted topographer who dedicated much of his life to documenting the noble seats and castles of the Duchy of Brabant. He was a meticulous researcher who collaborated with skilled engravers to create visual inventories of the region's aristocratic heritage. His publications are considered essential primary sources for the study of Flemish architecture and territorial history during the late seventeenth century. Le Roy’s work is characterized by a commitment to geographical accuracy and a systematic approach to heraldic and genealogical documentation.
