Bilder Jacob Le Roy (1633–1719) – View of Perce and Elewijt Castle – Belgium – Engraving (1694)
Beskrivning
"Castrum Dom:i De Perce et Elewijt" illustrates a bird's-eye perspective of the castle and lordship of Perce and Elewijt, famously known as Het Steen, the country residence of Peter Paul Rubens. The composition features the fortified manor house surrounded by a moat, expansive formal gardens, orchards, and a vast wooded landscape stretching toward the horizon. This engraving is from the work Descriptio Castellorum et Praetoriorum Nobilium Brabantiae, published in Antwerp in 1694. The plate includes three decorative cartouches: a central title scroll and two heraldic coats of arms in the upper corners, alongside a foreground scene of hunters on horseback.
Jacob Le Roy was a Belgian historian, canon, and topographer who dedicated his life to documenting the architectural and noble heritage of the Duchy of Brabant. He conducted thorough research to create a comprehensive visual inventory of the region's castles and seigneurial estates, collaborating with skilled engravers such as Lucas Vorsterman the Younger. His publications serve as vital primary sources for Flemish territorial history, genealogy, and seventeenth-century landscape design. Le Roy is recognized for his systematic approach to chorography, providing a permanent record of historical structures during the Spanish Netherlands period.
