Bilder Gerhard Mercator (1512–1594) – Map of Macedonia, Epirus, and Achaia – Greece – Engraving (1633)
Beskrivning
"Macedonia Epirus et Achaia" provides a detailed topographical and historical representation of ancient and early modern Greece, oriented with North at the bottom. The map encompasses the territories of Macedonia, Epirus, and the Peloponnese, illustrating the rugged coastline, numerous islands in the Aegean and Ionian Seas, and mountain ranges. This engraving is from the Mercator-Hondius Atlas, published by Henricus Hondius and Jan Janssonius in Amsterdam. The composition features a distinctive strapwork title cartouche and elegant calligraphic annotations, representing the peak of the Dutch cartographic tradition during the seventeenth century.
Gerhard Mercator was a seminal Flemish cartographer whose work defined the standard for geographical representation for centuries. He is most famous for his 1569 world map using the Mercator projection, which revolutionized nautical navigation. Mercator was also the first to compile a comprehensive collection of maps titled as an "Atlas," a project that was continued and expanded by Jodocus Hondius and his family. His maps are celebrated for their scientific accuracy, clarity of detail, and artistic execution. Mercator's legacy is foundational to the modern understanding of world geography and the development of systematic cartography as both a science and an art form.
