Bilder Henri Abraham Châtelain (1684–1743) – Ancient Maps of Germany with Religious and Cultural Scenes – Engraving (1720)
Beskrivning
"Germania Antiqua" presents a historical and geographical study of ancient Germany, featuring two distinct maps that detail the tribal territories and divisions of the region during the classical era. The work is surrounded by extensive French text columns providing remarks on the geography, origins, and laws of the ancient Germanic peoples. The upper portion includes two detailed vignettes: one depicting the different deities of the ancient Germans and another showing their sacrificial rites and religious cults. This engraving is from the Atlas Historique, published by Châtelain in Amsterdam, a seminal work that combined cartography with sociological and historical documentation.
Henri Abraham Châtelain was a Dutch Huguenot scholar and publisher who produced one of the most comprehensive historical atlases of the eighteenth century. His seven-volume Atlas Historique was a massive undertaking that integrated maps with genealogical charts, historical views, and ethnographic descriptions. Châtelain aimed to provide a complete picture of world history and geography for the educated public of the Enlightenment. He collaborated with various engravers and researchers to ensure his work reflected the most up-to-date knowledge of the time. His atlas remains highly valued today for its scientific breadth, technical precision, and aesthetic appeal.
