Beskrivning

"Carte Historique, Chronologique, Geographique de l'Empire Grec" presents a comprehensive overview of the vast territories encompassed by the Greek Empire under Alexander the Great. The central map illustrates the expanse from the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas in the west to the Indus River in the east, including Asia Minor, Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Persia. The map is framed by extensive French text panels and chronological tables that provide remarks on the conquests of Alexander, the founder of the empire, as well as lists of kings and significant historical events. This engraving is from the Atlas Historique, published by Châtelain in Amsterdam, designed to synthesize geographical data with a rigorous historical narrative.

Henri Abraham Châtelain was a Huguenot pastor and scholar based in Amsterdam who achieved significant renown for his multi-volume Atlas Historique. He served as the primary coordinator for this monumental project, which aimed to organize the history of the world into a structured, visual format. Châtelain’s work was innovative for its time, as it relied on complex comparative tables and scholarly annotations to accompany its maps and views. The atlas was produced during the height of the Dutch publishing era and reflects the Enlightenment period's focus on universal knowledge and systematic categorization. His legacy is defined by these intellectually ambitious publications that merged cartography with detailed historical and genealogical research.
