Bilder Marten de Vos (1532–1603) – View of The Crucifixion – Engraving (1585)
Beskrivning
"In Calvariae loco crucifixerunt eum, et cum eo alios duos, hinc et hinc, medium autem Iesum" illustrates the biblical scene of the Crucifixion on Golgotha. The composition features Christ on the central cross flanked by the two thieves, with a dramatic gathering of mourners, including the Virgin Mary and Saint John, and Roman soldiers casting lots for Christ's garments in the foreground. This engraving was published in Antwerp around 1585 by Adriaen Collaert as part of a significant religious series. The work is characteristic of the Late Northern Mannerist style, known for its emotional intensity, complex figural groupings, and detailed landscape background.
Marten de Vos was a leading Flemish painter and draughtsman who became one of the most influential artists in Antwerp following the return of Catholicism to the city. After traveling to Italy and reportedly working in Tintoretto's studio, he returned to the Netherlands and established a prolific workshop. He was a primary designer for printmakers, collaborating extensively with the Sadeler, Wierix, and Collaert families to disseminate his religious and allegorical compositions throughout Europe. His work played a crucial role in developing the Counter-Reformation iconography that defined late 16th-century Netherlandish art.
