Beskrivning
"Route d'Amsterdam a Moscow et de la a Ispahan et Gamron" illustrates the expansive overland and maritime trade routes connecting Western Europe to the Russian Empire and Safavid Persia. The map encompasses Europe, the Mediterranean, the Black Sea, and the Caspian Sea, detailing the geographical corridor used by travelers and merchants in the early eighteenth century. This engraving is from the work Reizen over Moskovie, door Persie en Indie, published in Amsterdam by Willem and David Goeree.
Cornelis de Bruyn was a Dutch painter, traveler, and author who spent much of his life documenting his journeys through the Middle East, Russia, and Asia. He is recognized for his commitment to drawing from nature and providing accurate visual accounts of the foreign landscapes and cultures he encountered. His publications provided some of the first detailed illustrations of Persepolis and various Russian territories to a Western European audience. De Bruyn’s contributions remain vital for their combination of artistic skill and early ethnographic observation.
