Bilder Cornelis de Bruyn (1652–1727) – Views of the Lofoten Mountains – Engraving (1711)
Beskrivning
"Montagnes Nommees Loeffoet" illustrates two panoramic coastal profiles of the Lofoten mountain range in Norway. The composition depicts jagged peaks and rocky shorelines viewed from the sea, featuring Dutch sailing vessels in the foreground of both scenes. This copper engraving is from the work Reizen over Moskovie, door Persie en Indie, published in Amsterdam by Willem and David Goeree in 1711. The work serves as a significant topographical record of the northern maritime routes explored by European travelers during the early eighteenth century.
Cornelis de Bruyn was a Dutch painter, traveler, and author who spent much of his life documenting his journeys through the Middle East, Russia, and Asia. He is recognized for his commitment to drawing from nature and providing accurate visual accounts of the foreign landscapes and cultures he encountered. His publications provided some of the first detailed illustrations of Persepolis and various Russian territories to a Western European audience. De Bruyn’s contributions remain vital for their combination of artistic skill and early ethnographic observation.
