Bilder Cornelis de Bruyn (1652–1727) – Views of Kolomna, the Bogoslovsky Monastery, and the Oka River – Russia – Engraving (1711)
Beskrivning
"Kolomna. Vue sur la Riviere. Cloitre Bogoslova. Vue sur la Riviere." features four topographical vignettes illustrating the landscape along the Oka River in Russia. The upper left view depicts the city of Kolomna with its Kremlin walls and church spires, while the lower left shows the Bogoslovsky Monastery situated on the riverbank. The remaining two panels provide scenic views of the river with local sailing vessels and wooded shorelines. This copper engraving is from the work Reizen over Moskovie, door Persie en Indie, published in Amsterdam by Willem and David Goeree in 1711. These views represent some of the earliest western documentation of the Russian heartland and its religious architecture during the early modern period.
Cornelis de Bruyn was a Dutch painter, traveler, and draftsman who spent several years exploring and sketching the Russian Empire and the Safavid Empire. He is recognized for his commitment to ocular evidence, often criticizing previous travelers for their inaccurate depictions of foreign sites. His detailed illustrations and accompanying narratives provided European scholars with a wealth of information regarding the geography, ethnography, and monuments of the East. De Bruyn’s work remains a primary source for understanding the visual history of pre-industrial Russia and the Middle East. His career was defined by the intersection of fine art and the emerging scientific rigor of the Enlightenment.
