Rare engraving by Giacomo Lauro originates from ”Antiquae urbis splendor. Rome”. The work was published by Vitale Mascardi in Rome, 1612(-28).

A fine series of early views of Rome, much reprinted and issued in various combinations of plates, titles and dedications. Lauro was well-known for his illustrations of Rome, in particular for this work and his Heroico Splendore della Citta de Mondo published in 1642, which had 50 views and plans of Rome.

Giacomo Lauro (1561–1645) was an Italian engraver and antiquarian renowned for his depictions of ancient Rome. He is best known for his publication Antiquae Urbis Splendor, a richly illustrated work showcasing the monuments and grandeur of ancient Rome, accompanied by descriptive text. Lauro’s engravings combined historical accuracy with artistic imagination, reflecting the Renaissance fascination with classical antiquity. His work remains a valuable resource for understanding both ancient Roman architecture and the early modern perspective on antiquity.
