Beskrivning
This finely engraved frontispiece introduces Les Plans et Profils des principales Villes et Lieux considérables du Comté de Flandre, an atlas of fortifications, towns, and strategic locations in the County of Flanders. The composition features allegorical figures representing military power and cartographic science, flanking a bust of Louis XIV. The figure at left is a classical warrior with a plumed helmet and shield, while the right figure holds a stylus and a plan, referencing the detailed military surveys contained in the volume. This decorative title page was produced in Paris at the royal printing house and reflects the grandeur of French military cartography under the reign of the Sun King.
Sébastien de Pontault de Beaulieu (c.1612–1674) was the premier military engineer and geographer to Louis XIV. He is renowned for producing one of the earliest comprehensive collections of military topographic engravings in Europe. His detailed plans documented fortresses, sieges, and battles, and his atlases became key tools of strategy, power, and propaganda for the French crown.
