Bilder Rigobert Bonne (1727–1794) – Map of the Western Hemisphere on a Horizontal Plane – Western Hemisphere – Engraving (1780)
Beskrivning
"Mappe-Monde sur un Plan Horisontal, située à 45d de latitude Sud. Hemisphere Occidental" illustrates a polar projection of the Western Hemisphere centered on the southern latitudes. The map displays the Americas, the Pacific Ocean, and early sightings of the Australian coastline, then referred to as Nouvelle Hollande. Two inset diagrams in the lower corners labeled Sphere Oblique and Pour la Latitude provide a mathematical and astronomical context for the specific projection used. This engraving was published in Paris in 1780 as part of the Atlas de toutes les parties connues du globe terrestre by Rigobert Bonne. The work documents the advanced cartographic techniques used during the Enlightenment to visualize the globe from unconventional perspectives.
Rigobert Bonne was a premier French cartographer and mathematician who served as the Hydrographer to the King at the Depot de la Marine. He was one of the most significant mapmakers of the late eighteenth century, known for his move away from the decorative excesses of earlier cartography toward a more scientific and functional aesthetic. His vast output included maps for many of the most important atlases and maritime publications of the era. Bonne's work is characterized by its meticulous topographical accuracy and clear presentation of complex mathematical projections and territorial data.
