This original 18th-century copperplate engraving titled Le Rhinocéros (The Rhinoceros) was created by Jacques de Sève for Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon’s monumental Histoire Naturelle. It depicts the Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) in a classical landscape with dramatic cliffs and skies, emphasizing the creature's armored hide and majestic stance.

Jacques de Sève (active 1740s–1780s) illustrated numerous animals for Buffon’s encyclopedic natural history volumes. His engravings are admired for their combination of zoological precision and artistic setting, reflecting Enlightenment ideals of science and beauty.
