Bilder Johann Christoph Weigel (1654–1725) – Map of Styria (Ducatus Styriae Tabula) – Hand-Colored Engraving (Early 18th Century)

Beskrivning
This hand-colored map by Johann Christoph Weigel presents the historical duchy of Styria (Steiermark), a region in present-day Austria and Slovenia. The map is divided into Upper and Lower Styria and shows towns, rivers, and mountain ranges in meticulous detail. The lower left corner features an elaborate allegorical cartouche depicting miners and classical figures, referencing the region’s economic and cultural identity, especially its mineral resources and alpine geography. The engraving is from Weigel’s Bequemer Schul- und Reisen-Atlas, an educational and travel-oriented atlas.
Johann Christoph Weigel (1654–1725) was a Nuremberg-based engraver and publisher known for his collaborations with the scholar Johann David Köhler. His atlases combined practical geography with refined baroque engraving, becoming standard tools for travelers and educators in the early 18th century. Weigel's maps are especially noted for their decorative cartouches and clean, legible layouts.
