Beskrivning
This detailed copperplate engraving by Jacques de Sève presents L’Aigrette, or The Egret, poised elegantly against a rustic landscape of mills and farmhouses. The bird is drawn with elongated proportions, fine feather detailing, and dignified posture, set within a dramatic sky and carefully composed background. The plate, marked Tom. VII, Pl. XX, pag. 376, comes from one of the volumes of Buffon’s monumental Histoire Naturelle, for which de Sève produced hundreds of zoological illustrations.
Jacques de Sève was a prominent French illustrator known for his contributions to Enlightenment-era natural history. His engravings combined scientific observation with classical aesthetics, often placing animals within imaginative, almost theatrical landscapes. His work helped shape the visual language of zoology in the 18th century.
