This detailed engraved map, split across two pages, features separate charts for the Island of Sangir (MAP van het Eiland SANGIR.) on the left, and the Talaud Islands (MAP van TALAUTSE Eilanden.) on the right. Produced by François Valentijn, this map originates from his monumental work, "Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën" (Old and New East-India), published between 1724 and 1726. Both sections meticulously illustrate coastal outlines, numerous smaller islands, and essential navigational details such as depth soundings and compass roses, providing a precise cartographic record of these East Indies territories in the early 18th century.

François Valentijn (1666–1727) was a Dutch minister, naturalist, and prolific author whose extensive travels and research in the Dutch East Indies formed the basis of his encyclopedic publication. His multi-volume "Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën" is celebrated for its comprehensive accounts of the history, geography, ethnography, and natural history of the region. Richly illustrated with numerous maps and views, Valentijn's work remains an indispensable primary source for the study of the Dutch colonial empire and Asian trade during the early 18th century.
