This topographical engraving provides a detailed plan of the fortified city of Goes in the Zeeland province of the Netherlands. The work displays the urban layout from a vertical perspective, highlighting the complex defensive network of star-shaped bastions, curtain walls, and a wide encircling moat. Within the city walls, the plate identifies major structures and public spaces, including the central market square, the Gothic church of St. Mary Magdalene, and various orchards and gardens. A numbered legend in the lower left corner provides a key to the principal civic buildings and gates, while the upper portion is decorated with a coat of arms supported by cherubs and a central banner reading De Stad Goes. This work is part of the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, a comprehensive historical and geographical documentation of the region's urban development during the late seventeenth century.

Mattheus Smallegange was a Dutch historian, genealogist, and translator primarily remembered for his monumental contribution to the historiography of the Zeeland province. His masterwork, the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, remains a seminal reference for the topography and history of the area, containing hundreds of detailed maps and city views. Smallegange spent decades compiling genealogical data and architectural records, collaborating with skilled engravers to create a definitive visual and written record of his homeland. His meticulous approach to documenting local history and civic identity ensured that his works remained essential resources for scholars and collectors interested in the Dutch Golden Age.
