Bilder Henricus Hondius (1597–1651) – Map of France – Hand-colored engraving (17th Century)
Beskrivning
This hand-colored engraved map provides a comprehensive cartographic representation of the Kingdom of France, labeled Gallia. The detailed composition spans from the English Channel and the coast of Brittany in the west to the borders of Germany and Italy in the east, and from the Low Countries in the north to the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean Sea in the south. The map is embellished with a large decorative cartouche in the lower left corner featuring the title flanked by allegorical figures representing abundance, while the Royal Coat of Arms of France, bearing three fleurs-de-lis, adorns the upper right corner. Maritime elements, including sailing vessels and a compass rose, decorate the ocean areas, reflecting the artistic standards of seventeenth-century atlas production. This work originates from the renowned Mercator-Hondius atlas, which served as a primary geographic reference throughout Europe.
Henricus Hondius II was a distinguished Dutch engraver, cartographer, and publisher who played a pivotal role in the Golden Age of Dutch cartography. As the son of the famous mapmaker Jodocus Hondius, he continued the family legacy by expanding and updating the celebrated Mercator-Hondius Atlas. Collaborating with his brother-in-law Jan Jansson, Hondius produced maps that were noted for their elegant engraving style, geographical accuracy, and aesthetic appeal. His firm in Amsterdam became one of the leading cartographic publishing houses of the era, competing directly with the rival Blaeu family and disseminating geographical knowledge to a global audience.
