Beskrivning

"Europe" provides a comprehensive cartographic overview of the European continent at the close of the eighteenth century. The map delineates national boundaries and regional divisions with delicate hand-coloured outlines in pink, yellow, and green, extending from the Atlantic Ocean to western Russia and the Ottoman Empire. A decorative neoclassical vignette in the upper left corner features the word "Europe" enclosed within a radiant sunburst and draped fabric. This hand-coloured engraving was published in Paris by Jean-Baptiste Tardieu as part of a historical atlas intended to document the geography of both the ancient and contemporary worlds. The work exemplifies the high standard of French cartography during the Enlightenment, prioritizing clarity, topographical detail, and systematic geographic categorization.

Jean-Baptiste Tardieu was a prominent member of the celebrated Tardieu family of French engravers and cartographers active in Paris. He was highly regarded for his technical precision and was frequently commissioned to produce maps for significant scientific and historical publications. Tardieu served as an engraver for the French government, contributing to the visual documentation of newly explored territories and classical geography. His career spanned a transformative era in French cartography, characterized by a transition toward greater empirical accuracy and the historical reconstruction of ancient civilizations.
