Beskrivning
"Labrus Carneus" illustrates a vibrant red and pink fish with distinct dark spotting near the dorsal fin, set against a neutral background. This hand-coloured etching is a plate from Marcus Elieser Bloch's Ichthyologie, ou Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière des poissons, published in Berlin starting in 1782. The plate features a dedication to the Queen of Prussia and is noted for its high level of anatomical detail and the application of iridescent finishes to simulate the natural sheen of fish scales.
Johan Friedrich August Krueger was a German painter and engraver active in Berlin during the late eighteenth century. He served as one of the principal artists and engravers for Marcus Elieser Bloch, contributing numerous plates to the most comprehensive work on fishes produced during the Enlightenment.
