Bilder Francis Willughby (1635–1672) – The Canada Goose, The Sheldrake, and The Great Black Duck – Engraving (1678)
Beskrivning
"The Canada Goose, The Sheldrake, and The Great Black Duck" illustrates three distinct waterfowl species arranged vertically, each accompanied by its Latin and English nomenclature. This engraving is a plate from The Ornithology of Francis Willughby, edited and published posthumously by John Ray in London in 1678. The work is fundamentally significant as it represents the first truly scientific system of ornithological classification, moving away from folklore and toward observation and anatomical description.
Francis Willughby was an influential English ornithologist and ichthyologist of the seventeenth century and a founding member of the Royal Society. Together with his mentor and collaborator John Ray, he traveled across Europe to collect and describe specimens, laying the groundwork for modern biological taxonomy. His primary contribution to science was the development of a classification system based on physical characteristics such as beak shape and foot structure. Willughby’s untimely death left Ray to complete and publish their monumental findings, which remained the definitive reference for ornithology until the era of Linnaeus.
