This etching was published in Leiden in 1707 as part of Pieter van der Aa's monumental collection of travels, Naaukeurige versameling der gedenkwaardigste zee en landreysen. The scene captures the European fascination with the royal courts of Southeast Asia and provides a detailed topographical and cultural record of the Kingdom of Pegu, located in modern-day Myanmar.

Pieter van der Aa was a prolific Dutch publisher, editor, and bookseller active in Leiden during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. He is best known for his massive multi-volume works documenting global exploration, which compiled accounts from various European voyages. His publishing house produced a vast array of maps and atlas plates, often reusing and re-engraving earlier works to create affordable and comprehensive geographical sets. Van der Aa’s contributions were pivotal in disseminating knowledge of distant lands and cultures to a broad European audience during the Dutch Golden Age and beyond.
